A Composite Field

  • Mackey Garage Top 1137 South Cochran Avenue Los Angeles, CA, 90019 United States (map)

In conjunction with the MAK Center, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE) presented A Composite Field, a new work by Yann Novak and Taisha Paggett at the Mackey Garage Top. Curated by Dino Dinco, this work brought together sound and installation artist Novak and choreographer and dancer Paggett.

A keen awareness of space and architecture—material, conceptual, corporeal—informed and influenced both artists’ work. Novak and Paggett took a sculptural approach to both sound and movement in their respective constructions of the spectating experience. Novak made field recordings that documented the aural presence of the Mackey Garage Top, which then informed how he and Paggett constructed their performance. These recordings were digitally altered to emphasize the unique characteristics of the space itself. Drawing on her ongoing interest in the cultural process of vision, seeing and being seen, Paggett constructed and performed a chain of actions inspired by the layered organic and artificial elements of both the space and the sound score.
