Animation Screening

  • Schindler House 835 North Kings Road West Hollywood, CA, 90069 (map)

The animation screening presented sixteen short works by fourteen artists, all examples of how the animation medium has been used to explore the potential of the hand drawn line to articulate or confound dimensionality, the pictorial, and temporality. The earliest pieces shown were Oskar Fischinger’s Wax Experiments (1921-23), and Dadaist Hans Richter’s Rhythm 23 (1923). Harry Smith, perhaps best known as a musicologist, was represented by Early Abstractions: No. 3 (1939-57). Co-curated by Director of the Experimental Animation Program at CalArts Maureen Selwood, in association with the MAK Center.
