In conjunction with the MAK Center’s Garage Exchange Vienna-Los Angeles at the Mackey Garage Top, the Goethe Institute on Wilshire Boulevard presented a talk and a screening revolving around the film Cold Rehearsal (2013) by Constanze Ruhm and Christine Lang.

In advance of the related Garage Exchange exhibition, the Specters of Godard panel was presented at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture’s home base, the Schindler House in West Hollywood.

The MAK Center presented a set of unique light fixtures, largely one-of-a-kind, designed specifically for this event by a select group of Los Angeles architects and artists.

MAK Games 2013 was a cocktail party and invitational tennis tournament benefitting the MAK Center, taking place on the recently completed infinity tennis court at John Lautner’s renowned Sheats/Goldstein Residence (1963) in Beverly Hills.

In an early letter, Pauline Schindler wrote, “One of my dreams, Mother, is to have, someday, a little joy of a bungalow, on the edge of the woods and mountains near a crowded city, which shall be open just as some people’s hearts are open, to friends of all classes and types…”. Pauline realized that dream with her marriage to architect Rudolph Schindler. Together they built the 1922 home that would come to be known as the Schindler House, a modernist landmark. Pauline’s radical social ideas informed its design as a live/work space for two couples, and Los Angeles’ artistic and political avant-garde flocked to her salons for decades. The MAK Center for Art and Architecture was conceived in this spirit.

Instigated by the tourism theme of Plan your visit, Rodrigo Marti’s Macunaima: The year of the snake shifted attention from migration as a short-term experience of hospitality to the experience of immigration as cohabitation.

Reenactment and historic architectural sites have a long and tangled history, which was the starting point for Cake and Eat It’s contribution to Plan your visit. Tea parties, costume balls, and other such societal events presented in period dress can be found across the country intending to activate a specific historical (and spectacle) context for visitors to various architectural time capsules.

The catalog launch event featured fresh-off-the-press catalogs and a discussion with Sylvia Lavin, author and UC Irvine professor Edward Dimendberg, Deputy Director of the Getty Research Institute, Andrew Perchuk, and art historian Alex Kitnick.

The MAK Center’s 2013 tour featured architecture related to Everything Loose Will Land and other shows in the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A.

Martino Stierli presented his book Las Vegas in the Rearview Mirror: The City in Theory, Photography, and Film (Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, 2013). Presentation of the book was followed by a panel discussion and signing.

Q.E.D. II was a series of performances curated around issues of affinity, influence, and provocation.

Thom Mayne and Bernard Tschumi joined Everything Loose Will Land curator Sylvia Lavin in a public conversation at the West Hollywood Library.

The MAK Center and ForYourArt hosted DIALOGUES: Art/Architecture, Paris/Los Angeles, an event in several modes that brought together artists and architects to share their experiences and ideas.

Katie Bachler, Sonia Brenner, and Maryam Hosseinzadeh coordinated an afternoon of activities which delved into the history of Olive Hill and its larger context in Los Angeles, across eras and through to what we experience today. The tour uncovered traces and stories from the past, with a group who walked the hill from the edges to the top, viewed oversize historic images of the hill, read lost letters, and explored the history of the olive in the Southern California landscape.
