Gregor Holzinger
with Florian Schafschetzy and Eva Sommeregger
Gregor Holzinger, born in 1981, lives and works in Vienna, Austria. He graduated in Architecture from the University of Applied Arts Vienna, studied Scenic Design at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and was a visiting student in a collaborative project at the Institute of Applied Theatre Studies at the University of Gießen, Germany. He has participated in several international collaborations, including with Peter Sellars (Los Angeles), Lebbeus Woods (New York), and Lead Pencil Studio – Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo (Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR).
In recent years, in addition to various architectural projects, Holzinger has increasingly focused on transdisciplinary projects that operate between the fields of architecture, set design, video, and installation art. These works can be described as site-/sight-specific installations, exploring modes of spatial perception from the viewer’s individual perspective and the real-time mapping of panoramic viewsheds or fields of view (-scapes), with the viewers themselves becoming the performers. His practice also engages with the concept of Raumtheater (“theater of space[s]”) and the theme of artificial or modeled realities, augmented through both digital and analogue means—approaching architecture in the broadest sense possible.
