Final Projects: Group XXXV

  • Mackey Apartments 1137 South Cochran Avenue Los Angeles, CA, 90019 (map)

Installation view of Final Projects: Group XXXV. Photography by Markus Krottendorfer, 2013.

Artist Markus Krottendorfer visited and documented numerous sites in Western states where aerospace, astronomy and architecture converge. For the exhibition, Krottendorfer highlighted both the Biosphere II in Arizona–a vast, hermetically sealed glass building supporting a small ecosystem and experimenting with the viability of future space colonies–and the simulated Martian landscape (MarsYard) at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Cal Tech in Pasadena.

Lucie Stahl presented the latest rendition of a do-it-yourself book she has been developing over the last several years. Rooted in her Posters project, the book was comprised of photographs that explored Stahl’s ideas of collage, found objects, and portraiture, and reflected her experiences in Los Angeles.

Architect Anton Savov’s project, Box in a Cloud, generated a crowd-sourced design for a hypothetical 1000 to 1500-people inhabitable environment in Los Angeles. Through an online interface boxinacloud.comBox in a Cloud participants could refine the inhabitable “cloud” in real-time by setting up specific purposes for their “box.”

Artists Steffi Alte and Eva Seiler’s film, On the Way to the Studio, showed Seiler laboriously working her way down Venice Boulevard, caught in between a suspenseful inability to make it to her studio and a meditative appreciation of the city she navigates.
