Q.E.D. | Part 1. Things Unsaid

  • Schindler House 835 North Kings Road West Hollywood, CA, 90069 United States (map)

Q.E.D. was a short series of long conversations on queer art and literature presented by Les Figues Press and the MAK Center. The series included three events over the course of three months; each evening featured a writer, an artist and a critic in a conversation about contemporary issues and conditions of queer art and literature. Q.E.D. took its name from a novel by Gertrude Stein; Q.E.D. (Quod Erat Demonstrandrum, or Things as They Are) was one of the earliest coming out stories, written in 1903 though not published until 1950, after Stein's death.

Each event was hosted and moderated by Les Figues Press Co-Director and author Vanessa Place. The first conversation, taking place in the S.P.G. studio in front of 35 guests on April 11, featured writer Melissa Buzzeo, critic Patrick Greaney, and artist Simon Leung. Along with the moderator, the three discussed the idea, usage, and problematics of quotation.

The second conversation, also in the S.P.G. studio, featured writer Michael du Plessis, critic Brian Teare, and artist Lincoln Tobier exchanging with a very participatory crowd of 22 guests on questions of political messaging.

The third conversation saw the highest attendance, as a crowd of 48 people pack into the M.D.C. studio of the Schindler House to hear artist Judie Bamber, writer Dodie Bellamy, and critic Terry Castle discuss a wide range of topics from contemporary pedagogy to artistic self-identity to the act of collecting.

Notable guests over the course of the series were: poet Jen Hoffer, writer Anna Joy Springer, Getty curator John Tain, artist Nancy Popp, writer Harold Abramovitz, art critic Carol Cheh, and curator Dino Dinco.
