Designer-in-Residence
at the Mackey Penthouse
The Designer-in-Residence program offers a long-term studio opportunity for a designer seeking a dedicated space for focused work and experimentation in Los Angeles. Structured as a rental arrangement, the program provides access to the penthouse suite at the Mackey Apartments and is intended for designers across interdisciplinary fields who wish to engage with the city as a site of research and dialogue.
Situated within a quiet residential site designed by R.M. Schindler, the Designer-in-Residence program supports sustained, independent work and the development of new projects informed by the histories and cultural context of Los Angeles.
Designed by Schindler in 1939 for Pearl M. Mackey, the Mackey Apartments were originally conceived as a four-unit apartment building, with the Penthouse later partially subdivided to create a fifth unit. The Mackey Apartments and Penthouse reflect Schindler’s distinctive approach to residential design, characterized by compact layouts, abundant natural light, built-in furniture, variable ceiling heights, and private outdoor gardens or mini-balconies.
The Mackey Penthouse is offered on a yearly rental basis and does not include a stipend or production support.
