The experience has since informed my critical engagement with the ongoing debate on land consumption and the future of the single-family home in Austria, a theme I later explored in the article “Retrofitting and Repairing” in Practices in Research (2024).”
Evelyn Temmel works in the fields of architecture and urban design. She studied architecture at the Graz University of Technology and the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura del Vallès in Barcelona. She has gained broad professional experience in several architecture offices in Graz and Vienna, as well as at OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen in Brussels.
As a MAK-Schindler Fellow (2014-15), she explored together with Bernhard Luthringshausen the systematics of private backyards in Los Angeles through the project Artifacts of a Parallel Ecology, in which they analysed the urban morphology and domestic practices of backyard spaces.
In 2021, she co-founded BELT Architektur Buero (since 2024 BELT Architektur ZT-GmbH) with Bernhard Luthringshausen in Vienna. Their work range from urban planning and architectural design to interventions in and with existing structures. Their theoretical focus lies in the interplay between social transformation and the influence of socio-political frameworks on the built environment, as well as the evolution and adaptation of architectural typologies.
Since 2014, Evelyn has been teaching at the Institute of Building Theory at Graz University of Technology, and from 2017 to 2024 at the Department of Building Theory, Institute of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Vienna University of Technology.
