Kostis Velonis
Kostis Velonis lives and works in Athens, Greece. He holds an MRes in humanities and cultural studies from the London Consortium (Birkbeck College, ICA, AA), London/Great Britain. Furthermore, he studied Esthétiques et Technologies des Arts at Université Paris 8 (D.E.A), Paris/France, and earned his PhD from the Department of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens.
Kostis Velonis evokes contradictory ideas through the use of simple materials. During the last few years, he has been interested in the repressed ghost of rurality within the city focusing on a sculpture of autarky. Recent shows include Part Company, Casa Maauad, Mexico City/Mexico (2016), Mount the Air, Kalfayan Galleries, Athens; This probably will not work, Lothringer13 – Städtische Kunsthalle München, Munich/Germany; Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society 1915–2015, Whitechapel Gallery, London/Great Britain; Super superstudio, Padiglione Arte Contemporanea, Milano/Italy (2015); and The Theater of the World, Museo Tamayo, Mexico City (2014). Kostis Velonis has received various fellowships and residencies including Casa Maauad, Artist in Residence, Mexico City (2016), MAK Schindler Scholarship, Architect in Residence at MAK Center, Los Angeles, CA/USA (2012) IASPIS (Swedish Arts Grants) Malmö/Sweden (2012).
